I don’t think I mentioned it before but my server broke a while ago, I think from the power getting turned off while it was still on. When I tried to turn it on, it never booted and kept showing post codes for the CPU on the motherboard display. I do have another CPU that would work in that motherboard, but I don’t have the thermal paste to replace it properly and I’m a little lazy so i never got around to it. Instead, I put in a motherboard which already had that CPU and a cooler on it. That motherboard is pretty bad, and it only has 2 memory slots too so it’s been running on only 3 gigabytes of ram. All in all, it was basically a scrap heap that was running the show.

As I am moving off to college soon, I thought it time to replace it with something more appropriate. That would be this: IMG_1115 A Dell R715 server. It’s specs are as follows:

  • 2x 12 Core AMD Opteron 6238
  • 16gb ECC DDR3
  • 4x SAS 137gb hard drives in RAID 5, effective ~400gb

Along with that is dual redundant power supplies, a monitoring server built in, and overall enterprise grade everything. It’s not the most powerful thing in the world, but I don’t think I’ll be maxing it out anytime soon. Right now I have it running a vanilla and modded minecraft server, a factorio server, gitlab, and a file server. This website is still hosted on the scrap pile but not for any particular reason.
